Gilbert demo update, Rodney/Dickinson next?

The UD Alumni Relations Blog’s sister-site (and frequent source of our plagiarized content) UDaily posted news today about the Gilbert Residence Hall demolition project with a interesting tidbit at the end of the piece. A tidbit that may contain hints as to the fate of another two dorm complexes.

The Gilbert Hall demo is slated to be finished in early 2010 and that 90% of the demolished material is being recycled. Still unanswered is what will be done with the space once everything is destroyed and cleaned up. New academic buildings? More fields/open areas for students to frolic and play? A wave pool and waterpark?

Penny Person, assistant director of facilities planning and construction, said that a study will be done on the possibility for new student residences on East Campus with the goal of providing sufficient housing to replace some of the existing residence hall complexes located on UD’s West Campus.

The only residence hall complexes on UD’s West Campus are Dickinson and Rodney. Looks like they’re next to come down. Stay tuned…

President Harker, tear down this dorm!

With all the media focus on the residence hall rate hike and the blimp (not to mention the appointment of two deans, ahem), very little has been made of the approved plans to demolish the Gilbert Residence Hall Complex.

At Tuesday’s meeting of the UD Board of Trustees, the go-ahead was given to scrap the Gilbert dorms which were built in 1965. Gilbert Complex is named in memory of the Rev. Eliphalet Wheeler Gilbert, the first (1834-35) and third (1840-47) president of Delaware College.

Gilbert follows the Pencader complex which was destroyed in 2005-2006 to make way for the new dorms of the Independence Complex.

The UD Alumni Relations Blog was not consulted on this decision for some reason. It appears that the Board of Trustees accidentally forgot to ask for our wise words and we’re waiting for the apologetic call as we type. That said, if we had been asked, we would’ve said, “tear that mother down.”
