Blue Hen get your gun

While UD Football is dominating the sports headlines on campus (shouldn’t Volleyball w/their come-from-behind wins and NCAA tourney appearances?), the UD Alumni Relations Blog is always on the prowl for other Blue Hen athletics stories.

Thankfully others have done the work for us (not the first or last time, fer shur).

Delawareonline.com has a story about the UD student, and sharp shooter, Andrew Engel ’10. Engel has won the Delaware state skeet shooting champion three times running.  For the unaware, skeet shooting is competitive target shooting done with a double-barreled shotgun.

To plagiarize from delawareonline.com:

In addition to competing in national skeet shooting tournaments — in July, Engel was second overall in the Junior World Skeet Championship’s collegiate division — the senior collaborated with fellow UD student Greg Doyle to start the UD trap and skeet shooting team, which had its first competitive season last fall. Doyle serves as president of the 20-plus member organization. Engel is the vice president and treasurer. The team practices twice a week at the Wilmington Trapshooting Association in Newark.

Even though Engel said he was the only member of the team that had competitive shooting experience when the club was founded, the team has enjoyed considerable success since its inception. After winning the first tournament it competed in at Virginia Tech, the team finished second to the United States Military Academy at a tournament last November in West Point, N.Y.

Also we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that the UD Trap and Skeet team received money via an Alumni Enrichment Award to attend the ACUI Intercollegiate Clay Target Championship in San Antonio last spring.  Alumni Enrichment Awards were created in 2001 by the UD Alumni Association (UDAA) to provide, through financial assistance, opportunities for students to enrich their education at the University of Delaware.
